As the country sees theaters continuing to slowly open, my blog is fueled by movies seen in the theater, on TV or Streaming.
Horrible Bosses (2011)
Director Seth Gordon
Don’t you love it when a colleague follows up with their assigned tasks? Bateman is reliable and creative. He sticks a mechanical pencil down his throat to hurl in the office garbage can. P.S. vomit is non-recyclable, as crazy as it sounds. As a result of the hurl, he can now feign illness, meet up with his colleagues and proceed in the planned reconnaissance on the boss we now know is horrible. Good visual and audio for the hurl.

The Birds (1963)
Director Alfred Hitchcock
This black and white film, made when bedrooms for a couple were to show twin beds, does not refrain from building up the anticipation of other bodily functions, such as the spew. Survivors of the school, café and gas station attacks sit huddled in a house waiting for the imminent attack.
The suspense and tension are seen and felt just watching the young girl in the scene. She gets increasingly sweaty and uncomfortable. It even appears her face washes pale. We know what she is feeling all too well, and where she is heading to hurl. She dashes into another room of the house that is also banned from showing realism. No toilets in this movie. No distinct sound is heard, and she returns to the room a bit too quickly. But the buildup serves us the satisfaction.
Side note: I have seen The Birds many times and only during the pandemic did I even notice this scene. The birds are the red herring….watch the girl.

Basic (2003)
Director John McTiernan
Sgt. Muellar (yes, a bit too close to Buellar), puked out all the gory secrets as DEA Agent Hardy gets ever so close to the who in the who dunnit plot. The spew (not the movie) delivers.

Indignation (2016)
Director James Schamus
A movie about fate and choices seems primed for a well-planned barf scene. Marcus finds himself in the dean’s office seeking relocation of living space. He doesn’t seem to be feeling so well and we can feel he is churning up some masterpiece. The Dean sees him as a malcontent, even though Marcus asks to leave the office so he can barf in private. I did not know malcontents were so thoughtful. His small insignificant spew at the end of the scene disappoints.

Silk Road (2021)
Director Tiller Russell
Hmmmmm, a true story that involves an unregulated marketplace on the internet. Sounds like Amazon’s Marketplace. I am sure there is barfing in that scenario as well, but for us and this blog we are looking at another movie based on a true story.
In Silk Road we find fake murders and delight in chicken noodle soup as the recognized look alike for barf. This is followed by the detail of wiping away the iconic Campbell’s noodle and yet another hurl reaction when the video of the fake murder is viewed (now streaming on Amazon Prime). It is all deliciously done and aligns well with fake murder by asphyxiation. 12 pack of Campbell’s chicken noodle soup is $17.88, free shipping, arrives tomorrow. Are we sure this isn’t a movie about Amazon?

Days of the Bagnold Summer (2019)
Director Simon Bird
Daniel’s Mum feels if the topic makes you uncomfortable then you can talk about it. Daniel disagrees. And to his surprise, his Mum, the “most boring person in the world” holds his hair back when he barfs all his teenage philosophical angst in the toilet after drinking with a friend. Another lovely time between a Mum and her son.

The Courier (2021)
Director Dominic Cooke
This movie appreciates the angel of the puke scene to give perspective. Greyville Wynne is pretending on a plane, sweating on a plane, then puking on a plane. We see the bird’s eye view as he kneels in the plane’s bathroom to rid himself of fear. I was most astonished about how much room he had in the bathroom. Leg room is not an issue for this particular seat on the plane.

The Wrong Turn (2021)
Director Mike P. Nelson
Like many horror movies, a group of young adults go on an adventure even after they are encouraged not to do so by creepy people. There aren’t many wrong turns in this movie in the handling of the barf. Jen yolks in the toilet with a wonderful side spew camera view. Please do this more. Commit to the scene.
There is also a pregnant woman in the movie and, as expected, the 1st trimester barf makes an appearance.
Without ruining it for you, there is also a nightmare from the past spew and the scene that follows is the icing on the cake.

Cherry (2021)
Directors Anthony and Joe Russo
In a movie that includes a bunch of oxy and a drug dealer named Pills and Coke, you’d expect some puking. The basic premise, when you are flush, you buy coke. When the dope runs out you feel sick. Nothing unique here.

Together Together (2021)
Director Nikole Beckwith
Just like movies with drug dealers named Pills and Coke, movies with pregnant women guarantee vomit hurling through the air.
In the usual awkward, but adorable presence that is Matt (Ed Helms), pregnant Anna gets lots of support as she sits, stands, pushes, and pukes her way through the cramps she thinks is the beginning of her labor. Well played Anna. Although an expected, if not obligatory hurl, well played.

Mortel Kombat (2021)
Director Simon McQuoid
Subzero is a bitch. Sometimes, origin stories are as well. In this particular ninja warrior origin story, the father is slayed to eliminate the blood line. The father pukes a ninja elite slimy wad as he crawls to his ultimate demise. Good attention to puke detail aligning it to the martial arts fantasy film.

Killer Elite (2011)
Director Gary McKendry
A nomination for Best Visual Effects is well earned by this movie. As the mercenaries proceed with an impossible revenge plan cooked up by the usual crazed youngest son with Daddy issues, we are treated with an aerial view spew. Great splat and color.

Hit and Run (2012)
Directors David Palmer and Dax Shepard
Annie’s insistence on a nonviolent approach to Charlie’s conflict resolution is pulled from the director’s life. As for the puke, if more had been pulled from the director’s life to give us some of the gross fun accompanying the hurl, the hurl-o-meter score would be higher. Instead, we are left with bros in a parking lot and some squishy off camera puke noise. You can do better.

The Gentleman (2020)
Director Guy Ritchie
Lord George is good at what he does, including projectile vomiting. Here we have great detail, level of surprise, grossness, and a full spew-extravaganza. In this scene, sound also counts. Rumbling intestines, and for a glorious few seconds we are not certain which orifice will rid him of his tea.

Zola (2020)
Director Janicza Bravo
It is no surprise that Derreck is the one puking in this movie. Seeing his inner moral character battle gives us the nod of where to look. He does his purge well and helps move this crazy fun movie along.

The Jakal (1997)
Director Michael Caton-Jones
The Jakal is as good at disguises as he is killing people. Let’s just say, neither are believable. Lucky for the blog that one murderous scheme involves parking his minivan in a public garage and spraying lethal vomit inducing poison on the door handle. I guess the van was a rockin’ because the intended victim came a knockin’.

Nine Days (2021)
Director Edson Oda
If you were asked what the most disturbing of a person’s life, how would you answer? If you were discussing barfing around a table, what would that consist of? All of this, and much much more is unveiled in this movie. A straightforward approach to puking.

A Million Little Pieces (2019)
Director Sam Talor-Johnson
Getting settled into drug rehab apparently includes some guy talking about anal. Did not see that on the Patient’s Rights. I might need a HIPAA refresher.
The puke aligns with detox in this movie, just poorly placed with the anal monologue.
